The Wappen von Hamburg was built at the Deich-tor shipyard for the Admiralty and was launched in 1669. The main purpose of the ships developed was as an escort ship to protect the convoys of the city and also to protect the merchant fleets of Hamburgs trading partners. Attacks by Corsairs on merchant ships were a widespread problem at this time especially around Hamburg's Elbe estuary and the entrance to the Mediterranean sea near Gibraltar.
On the 10th of October 1683 while anchored in the port of Cadiz the Wappen von Hamburg exploded after catching fire. Half her crew was killed including Admiral Karbfanger. This ship model is an accurate representation of this famous German escort ship.
