Dan Van Severen (Lokeren, 8 February 1927 - Ghent, 15 February, 2009) was a Belgian painter. Van Severen was a representative of abstract painting.
His abstract art was built on simple geometric motifs: square, rectangle, rhombus, circle and oval. His drawings sometimes existed of just a single line.
From the combination of a square and rectangle he later distilled the shape of a cross, the universal sign, that eventually became the key of all his compositions. The cross was always present in his later work. During Expo 58 he united with friends and acquaintances from the avantgarde environment and formed group G58.
His paintings are among others exhibited in the SMAK, the Muhka and Mu.ZEE.
Also the sons of Dan van Severen were artists. Maarten van Severen (1956-2005) was a furniture designer and interior architect and Fabian a designer.
